Original model pieces
Maurice Wilkins asked Francis Crick and James Watson to verify the pieces (handwriting). The original model's pieces once dis-assembled had become part of the molecular model components that were kept by John Kendrew.
The reconstruction is uses the original model bases throughout. The side chain pieces were re-fabricated from stainless steel to differentiate them visually as 'not part of the original' model. The original pieces used for the sugar phosphate side chains were not sufficient in number for a reconstruction of the whole model. A decision was made in consultation with the Science Museum to build new side chains from the original design.
